Maximum size of report recordsource?

What is the maximum number of characters that a report recordsource may contain?

I'm setting the recordsource dynamically in VBA allowing the user to select a lot of conditions, and with a large number of selections, I am getting the following error: "The setting for this property is too long."

This last came up for me under Access 2.0 so I'll only relate my experience relative to it. I had massive where conditions and used
DoCmd.ApplyFilter , sWhere
to at least break up the SQL string somewhat.

I don't remember if that solved the problem entirely. I still seem to remember a 255 character limit somewhere, and resorting to lame abbreviated field names and such.

Perhaps someone else can help better, but I thought this might be better than nothing for you.
