Hi,

Does anyone have an idea of how many simultaneous connections can be made to a foxpro database?
I've found an article that claims maximum 50 users and one with states it's unlimited, which one is correct?

Thanks in advance
Elise

Elise,

I've never heard of a limit of 50. In fact, I've never heard of any particular limit I would assume it is limited by resources and network capacity.

By the way, are you talking about accessing the VFP database engine natively through VFP itself, or from some other client, via ODBC?

hi Mike,

I am talking about accessing the VFP database natively.

Was the "article that claims maximum 50 users" written by someone attempting to cast doubt on VFP and/or wanting to promote another database environment?

Since way back in the FPW days it was not too unusual for us to have clients with applications working for 100's or 1000's of users. Obviously not ALL of those users would be concurrent users, but I can guarantee that it would typically have been over 50.

I seriously doubt that VFP has downgraded its concurrent user limits since the FPW days.

Good Luck,
JRB-Bldr

Elise,

I think JRB-Bldr is right. I know that there are applications running today that regularly have more than 50 simultaneous users.

Do you happen to have a reference to the article you mentioned?

I concur.
There is nothing 'embedded' within the VFP tables themselves to track users. Therefore, VFP or the table itself has no clue as to how many users are connected to that file. It is an OS or Network OS limitation. The number of physical connections is limited to the number of user licenses for the server.
The number of realistic connections is limited of course, only by the hardware and software (and programmer's abilities to use them all optimally [smile]).

Elsie,

The article actually said:

Visual FoxPro is an adequate database for small networks with the average number of user around 50.

Strictly speaking, that's correct. But an average is not the same as a maximum, and, in any case, just because it is 'adequate' for that number doesn't mean that it limited to that number.

The fact that the article is un-signed and un-dated should also raise a question mark.

Anyway, I'm pleased this thread has reassured you. If you have further issues re Visual Foxpro, be sure to stop by again.
