maximum length of sql string 1

Hi,
Can anyone tell me what the maximum lenght of a select statement is. I am coming from Foxpro where there is a limit of 8100 characters. This may seem large but program requires me to build the SQL from drop down lists and I need to know how many I can select from the lists before it fails.

Your question, I think, can be answered by this document:

In short, for v. 3.23, it's 16MB. For v.4.01 and higher, it's the physical memory of the server (up to a theoretical maximum of 2GB).

Check your my.cnf file for the max_allowed_packet directive. It may dictate a smaller size.
