maximum length of a URL is 2083 characters

In Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE), the maximum length of a URL is 2083 characters, with a maximum path length of 2048 characters. If these lengths are exceeded when viewing through the DHTML Viewer, the browser is blank. This applies to both POST and GET request URLs.

In a Viewrpt.cwr request, the number or length of parameters may cause the URL to exceed these values and the view request will fail.

What can be done about this limitation?

Solution

This is a known issue with Crystal Enterprise (CE) versions 8 and 8.5 for Windows and has been tracked. The Track/Problem ID is: ADAPT00101878.

Hot Fix updates addressing this issue are available as indicated below. With the updates, the prompt info for the viewing request stored in cookies is used if the prompting information if the URL line is too long. The DHTML Viewer should now correctly load the report in these cases.

Crystal Enterprise 8 for Windows
----------------------------------------
For CE 8.0 for Windows deployments, the fix for this issue is included in the CE 8.0 Web Component Server (WCS) Monthly Hot Fix (MHF) update. Search for CE80WCSWIN* and download the appropriate language build at:

This issue is corrected in the following component and version and later:

Wcs_xn_reportviewer.dll, version 8.0.3.500, dated 09/10/2002

====================
HOT FIX DEPENDENCIES:

When applying the CE 8.0 WCS update, the CE 8.0 APS and Common Files Monthly Hot Fix (MHF) updates should be applied as well. Search for the files below and download the appropriate language build at:

CE80APSWIN*
CE80COMWIN*

If you have made any modifications to ePortfolio, the CE80WCS update may overwrite your custom code. Therefore, it is recommended that you back up your ePortfolio directory before applying the Hot Fix.

Crystal Enterprise 8.5 for Windows
---------------------------------------------
For Crystal Enterprise 8.5 for Windows deployments, the fix is included in the most recent Crystal Enterprise 8.5 Service Pack, which is available for download at:

The Service Pack is available for English, French, German, and Japanese versions.

If you have made any modifications to ePortfolio, the CE 8.5 Service Pack 1 may overwrite your custom code. Therefore, it is recommended that you back up your ePortfolio directory before applying the Service Pack.

This issue is corrected in the following component and version and later:

Wcs_xn_reportviewer.dll, version 8.5.0.1013, dated 10/24/2002

Hot Fix updates are NOT supported for applications with OEM versions of Crystal Decisions products. To determine if you are running an OEM version, please click the "Warning" link at:

Weekly Hot Fix (WHF) updates include the most current fixes released by Crystal Decisions. However, they are only available for English deployments and have received sanity testing only. Monthly Hot Fix (MHF) updates, if available, have received additional sanity testing and are available in English, French, German, and Japanese. You only need to apply the WHF or MHF, not both.

Please read the "Legal Disclaimer", which is incorporated herein by reference.

For more information on the issues resolved by this Hot Fix, please view the Readme or PDF file included in the TAR or ZIP file.

I'm curious [surprise] as to why isn't 2048 enough.
