Hiya all!
This is my first post to this board.
I have recently bought an old 6500 to replace my aging web/mail/file server.

It has arrived with two Pentium II 400Mhz Xeons, but I can see from the lable inside that it is upgradable to 4x P II 500Mhz Xeons.

I am trying to find out if I can replace these with newer P III Xeons? and if so, what is the maximum spec CPU that I can use?

I have tried searching both on this site and on compaq but to no avail.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Cheers!

No: they are incompatible.

Cheers for the prompt reply... according to the Compaq support forums, the server can support upto 4x PIII 500MHz Xeon. Is this not the case?

Yes, PIII/500s, but not 600s or 800s (I slightly misunderstood and thought you wanted to install faster than 500s). The benefit of upgrading from 400s to 500s will be not be terrific - in fact may not be noticable unless you have monitored the system and seen that you are regularly maxing out the CPUs.

I slightly misunderstood thinking that you wanted to install faster than the 500s. The PIII/500s will be fine. However, the benefit will be minimal - in fact, unless you have monitored the CPU usage and regularly max out, the benfit may be imperceivable.

Cheers!

I appreciate that the difference will be minimal, but I can get hold of 4 P3 500Mhz chips for the same price as 2 P2 400Mhz chips.

If I could pick your brain one more time ;)

This item on ebay has a compaq part number and will therefore be suitable, however,
eBayISAPI.dll
these[/url] are much cheaper, but seem to be pre-production stock... will the second set of CPUs (with 2MB cache) work in this server? Without the part number, I can't be sure...

Cheers for your valuable post!

someone is telling me i can fit slockets into my server and use 800mhz socket chips. i called BS but who knows? anyone ever tried this ???
