Should I even attempt to use a BSR222 with a wireless antenna, or will my speeds be way too slow?

Assuming it does not have external antenna capability I am thinking what ever wireless device you speak of controls the speed and does not hinder any router hooked up to it.
Maybe depends on what setup you are talking about.

Thank you, I ditched the BSR222 and applied for a Static IP address, which fixed my network problems on the newer router.
