I was planning to upgrade a computer from win95 to win98. so I decided to copy the hard drive using MaxblastII so I'd have a backup in case anything went wrong. The original HDD is a Quantum Bigfoot CY appro 4gb. The target was a Maxtor D740X 20gb. Originally I got an error message after about 93% copy, and there was no useable data on the target. When I tried it again, I had the same problem, but now both drives are TOTALLY HOSED! They are unreadable and unbootable. When I put either one in as a slave in another system, the system fails to boot. FDISKwill not recognize the drives, but the bios will. I've tried Spinrite and PowerQuest Lost & Fund, and neither will recognize either of the drives. I can't even re-format them because when I try to use them as a slave, the whole system locks up.

I sure would appreciate any help, as this system does not belong to me.

Use the powermax to do a trouble shoot on the disk , also a lowlevel format might fix your problem { in powermax also] Hope This Helps Solve Your Problem

Here are some educated guesses. <g> I am neither a Tech nor an expert. Have you tried installing the new HD as a single, without chaining to the other HD? Are the jumpers on the new HD set properly re: slave, master, and such? Are you using the end connector on the master? Does your computer do automatic detection of the HD settings? Have you gone into the bios to set it up for automatic detection? Is this by any chance one of the older machines that don't do automatic detection and settings? Is this HD one that you have to use a special installation disk for the new HD?

The questions are designed to help you work out the problem on your own, but if you will provide the answers to those questions, it might help others to help you better.

Thanks for the help, guys. I covered all the basics, Steve, but I appreciate your input. Nightowl, thanks for the tip on powermax. I downloaded it, but the tests generate errors and it won't even perform the low level format. I called Maxtor tech support. They don't know what happened or how to fix it. So far the drive is still useless - unreadable, unformatable, unrecognizable.

Currently I'm trying to restore that data from the the drive I originally copied to, onto another drive, using Lost & Found. The fat was corrupted from the Maxtor process, but it looks like I'll be able to salvege most of the data, although it only copied 93% before it bombed out. What a mess....?!@#$%^&!
