max text in an excel cell

What is the maximum amount of text you can put in one cell in Excel? I would also appreciate if someone could give me a reference.

I got asked the very same question at work the other day. My response:

Use Access, a memo field will hold 65,000 characters (if I recall correctly).

supports Skip's (32,767 characters) post, and adds that a column width (display) can only be 255 characters, plus the 1024 character rule
