MAX 6000 slow connects

I have a MAX 6000 running TOS 9.0.2 (tik.m60). I have two PRIs feeding it on the WAN side. It supposedly has K56 modems in it. But the highest connection most people get is 28800. Once in a blue moon, some one will connect at a higher speed (38600).

I understand that I'll never see 56Kbps. But I think I should frequently see more than 28K and possibly see something in the 40K range.

I know I could update the TOS to 9.0.6 but I am not real conversant in TOS. The guy who set it all up is now gone. I'm a little hesitant to tackle many changes w/o a support contract which they also let expire quite a while ago.

Is there a config option I may have wrong? Could the PRIs be provisioned funny? Would a new version of TOS solve my ills?

Any ideas?

If truth were not absolute, how could there be justice?

Try going to Ethernet > Mod Config > Tserv Options and make sure MDM Modulation is not set to V.34. It should be set to V.90.

Thanks for the idea.

I checked and it was set to V.90.

Any other ideas?

Generally speaking my experience has been that slow connect speeds are a result of either poor line quality or incompatibilities in user modems and the modems on the MAX. Regarding line quality, you can run a modemdiag debug to see more information on what happened with the modem. To do this goto diagnostic mode (ctrl-D, then d=diagnostics) type the command: modemdiag and press enter. You will see confirmation of the command with the message "MODEMDIAG debug display is 0x1". Have a caller dial-in, connect, then drop off. Shortly after they drop off you should get some output. From this you should see the Tx and Rx rate, compression used, etc. You should also see a figure for Line QUALITY. This number ranges from 0 to 128. The lower the number the better. If the number is quite high then most likely the problem is the line quality. If the number is relatively low then your problem may be incompatibilities in modems.

If it looks like incompatibility is the culprit then you might want to consider upgrading the MAX to the latest TAOS you can get your hands on (ftp.ascend.com/pub/software-releases). However, starting with 9.1 you now have to have an upgrade maintenance contract with Lucent in order to get the most recent versions available. Currently they are on 10.1. You may also want to try upgrading the firmware on the user modems as well. Beyond that will most likely require hardware upgrades.
