Matting Command

Why does the "matting" command only allow edits occasionally such as defringe or remove black. Most of the time the command is grayed out. How do I get it to activate?

As long as a layer is selected (not the background), it should work. It's only really relevant if you have a cutout on a transparent background though, to get rid of unwanted halo effects.

...also, make sure to deselect before using it.

Just make sure the layer you are working on is the parent one, or ontop, hit control + A then try if not then hit Control + D (deselect.
