I am trying a simple Index and Match and it seems not to work. I cannot use a vlookup as the format on the columns are different.

ColumnA ColumnB

A C
B E
C A
D B

i want a simple INDEX MAtch formula which will lookup column A and see if it is in column B and then put it in column C. I am playing with tons of rows.

Hi,

"I cannot use a vlookup as the format on the columns are different."

What does that mean? It might make a difference.

1) Actual data, or an upload, would be better than A, B, C and

2) please clarify "lookup column A and see if it is in column B and then put it in column C." "It" is ambiguous. So in your little demo, what values would appear in column C?

I would like to see th values of column A in Column C for a match.

What i mean by format is that in one column user has typed in and then done an enter key , in some cells they have done a copy paste. Can't upload a sample due to data confidentiality. If i have the formula then i can try to play with it in my spreadsheer,

Okay, since you refuse to provide an explicit example, here's my guess at what you're asking for...
[pre]
A C C
B E D
C A A
D B #N/A
[/pre]
...with this formula
[tt]
C1: =INDEX(A:A,MATCH(A1,B:B,0),1)
[/tt]
