Is a masters' degree in Computer Science really a worthwhile venture? I have a BS in MIS and a Master's Degree in training and development to go along with four years experience in web development and database programming. I want to move into an architectual role in the next few years, but I am not sure if certification or grad school education is the better alternative. I want to eventually start my own consulting business. Do I need another degree, certifications, more time in the industry, or a combination of all of the above?

Certifications are your best bet. A masters degree can scare off a prospective employer. They may make the assumption that you are looking for too much $. Get some Certifications along with more experiance and you may look better to any future employer. Masters degrees are good, however for the IT industry they can hurt your chances. I am about to finish my BS in MIS. I have an opportunity to go for a Masters as well. But after talking to a few customers who hire for their IT depts, they say the Masters can hurt your chances ONLY because they are afraid of an individuals salary requirements. But this is just in my area. Could be different else where. James Collins

James,
Perhaps a clear "salary expectations" statement in the cover letter of the application could prevent them from getting scared off? Surely they'd see that before they see the Masters' degree?
