I'm trying to size my master server. I will have approx 48TB of data on 4 NetApp filers attached to 10 LTO2 tape drives. I know I will use a SUN system, but how many CPUs, ram, etc? I've heard that a 24TB site uses a E4500 with 6 cpus, but they have 100+ clients. Anyone have experience with such a large site? Thanks.

I would say that the server sizing does not depend of the amount of data backed up but on the kind of devices connected to it.

CPU :

1 CPU / NIC Gigabit adapter
1 CPU / 2 tape devices

RAM:

256-512 MB RAM / 1 tape device (on the server

DISK SPACE:

110 bytes / file backed up (don't forget number of cycles)

If tape devices or handled by the Netapp Filer (NDMP) I don't think that you need a so huge amount of memory on the backup server.

Hope this helps.

Does anyone know how media servers would play a role in master server sizing? Or better yet, does anyone have a similar Netbackup deployment?
