master pages not applying in CS3

I converted a quark 4.0 doc over to cs2, then upgraded to cs3. The master page that is coming through is one that no longer exists in the cs2 and cs3 version of this doc. I have tried to apply the correct master page and it just gives me a blank page. I can't seem to overwrite the master page from before with the correct version.

Have you tried "overide master items" or "detach all items from master" in the pages window before applying the new master?
