Hi,

The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer DEBBIE that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{FFC4F88E-192C-4A10-88. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.

Ugh? Anyone got any ideas? Appreciated!

Damon

There is a pecking order to the browse list, workstations are the lowest then servers then domain controllers. When a new station is introduced or maybe turned off for a while then turned back on it may claim to be the master as it isn't aware of another master browser, an election is then forced and the highest ranking OS will assume the role.
This error isn't usually a problem unless it occurs all the time.

You can create a schedule task to start and stop your browser on your main AD server .create a txt file ,{net stop "computer browser"
net start "computer browser"}then rename file to restart masterbowser.bat ,,then setup a schedule for every hr to start and stop your browser it will make sure it is a MAster browser

The Browser is only relevent when NetBIOS is running on the hosts/network. If you disable NetBIOS on the hosts with Static IP Addresses and then via DHCP Option 0x1 for DHCP Clients you will never see this message again.....

Windows 2000 computers complain a little about not being able to register IIS Services (Event ID 105's) but 2003 and XP don't.

I am curious since this is a Windows 2003 forum I am surprised you haven't all disabled NetBIOS and used AD to publish your shares and whatever else since it is pretty flexible. The Browser is archaic and with a little management can be easily disabled.

In my environment we use a feature that prevents people logging onto certain stations and this is dependant on NetBIOS.

bothrevenge2, what feature is this? Is it a Microsoft one or a third-party application? I am keen to know as Microsoft seem to be pushing people to get rid of NetBIOS.

I recommend disabling NetBIOS wherever possible since it reduces network traffic (slightly) plus it stops PC's listening on the most commonly 'attacked' TCP & UDP ports.

It's a feature that is set on the users tab in active directory "User can logon to these stations" I believe it is called and it's built into windows.

I agree with what you say as I have considered it myself unfortunately quite a few network tools rely on the browse list including Symantec Antivirus and a couple of remote support products we use. I do have NetBIOS turned off on my web servers.
