master browser help 2

have have my computer set to be a browser, but when i do a net view command or nbtstat -n, it shows it as a master browser, how can i change this, i tell it tell it to release & it states that it does,...

i run a peer-to-peer network with static ip's, i use a workgroup.. i have netbois over tcpip, any ideas

i was able to fix part of the problem, i can browse the network now, but i'm still have other computer trying to cause an election, when the server is set to be the master browser, some are 2000 others are xp, the defualt is set on the clients to auto, so if i change that to yes, will that correct the problem.

Elections for the master browser happen quite often and are normal. There is a hierarchy for which machine will win based on O/S so if the network is consistant then the same machine will always win.

My question to you is: what has happened that you need to mess with this automatic, background process? It should not matter which computer is the master browser as long as all the systems agree. If the computers get confused (i.e. more than one thinks it is the master) a few well placed reboots will usually fix things up.

To prevent a workstation becoming a master browser, or creating election issues:

. Start, Administrative Tools, Services, and set the Computer Browser service to Manual; or,

. Start, Run, regedit and find the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters\IsDomainMaster
Set the value to "no"

the reason why i have to mess with this, is because i backup my nas through network places, so if i can not browse the network, i am not able to complete my backup
