I'm wondering what would be the optimal and cost efficient solution for a website whose storage needs need to increase over time, starting with an initial 500 gigs and incrementing over time to 1000, 2000, ....50000 gigs.

I spoke to some dedicated server providers and most say they can only equip their servers with up to 8 hard drives.

Look into external SCSI cages. I've had 24 disks in them.

If you're looking at expanding as far as 50TB then you should really look at a SAN. The Dell|EMC CX3 SAN range is pretty good as you can start with say a CX3-20 and upgrade when you need more disk or performance ending up with a CX3-80 without having to replace all the hardware each time.
