Mass Updating File System Security Settings

Hello Everybody,

Is there a way to mass update security settings on the file system? Here is what happened. A person who had rights copied a bunch of files and directories to a folder that he has full rights to. When he did this all of the folders he copied over only granted him rights to read them. As the administrator I have taken ownership of these but now I have to manually go in to each folder and resetup the security access. In many cases I also need to do this to some of the files.

To fix this I been right clicking on the file or folder, go to sharing and security -> select security tab -> advanced and then check the box to let the folder or directory inherit security from it's parent. This works but it is time consuming. It would be nice if I could reset this for all of the sub folders and files.

You may be able to use xcalcs within a vbscript, I would check that forum or maybe to uber genius Mark will pop in. Good luck.

This can be done with xcacls as Cory suggests but you could give NTFSFix a try i came accross it the other day and it's pretty handy and straight forward.

You can also try doing a restore from your backup system. Most will restore old file permissions as well.

I've only used it twice to alter permissions on users home folders but it worked flawlessly both times.

I will move the first section later this week and then try it to modify. This is not a user home directory area but it looks like it will work anyway. Once I try that I will close this thread out if it works. Thanks for the info!
