I have a masquerading linux box. Now I'm no expert when it comes to linux, but I do know that it's running Redhat with sendmail, which then forwards to the MS Exchange server. I'm planning to change the name of the e mail server due to an upgrade, and was wondering how potentially difficult it will be to change the DNS zones (?) that the linux box forwards to. I know this is really vague, but any pointers at all in the right direction would really help :eek:)

Thanks all

If all you want to do is change the computer name, just update the 'A' record in the DNS zone that the Exchange server is a part of. I don't see how this would be a problem as long as all of the proper RRs on your DNS servers are updated after the change. Also, does you Sendmail server use the Exchange servers hostname or IP address to forward the mail? It might not even use the hostname of the Exchange server.

Thanks for your help :)

The server definately forwards to the hostname, because it's server.lan.domain.org, etc. I am having trouble finding the 'A' record though, but as I said I'm pretty new to the whole linux thing, so it's probably me as opposed to the system!!!

Are you running your DNS servers on Windows or Linux? If you are running it on Linux, you need to edit the domains zone file, that is usually located in /var/named. To see what the zone file is called, look at your /etc/named.conf file and look for something like these lines...

options {
directory “/var/named”;
};

zone “yourdomain.com” in {
type master;
file “yourdomain.com.zone”;
check-names fail;

In the above case, the file is /var/named/yourdomain.com.zone

Open the above file and look for the 'A' (or Host) record of your Exchange box.
