masking

I have created a prison scene with the following layers.

Mask - which is a small red circle
prison - which is the prison itself
Dark Filter - which is a large rectangle covering the scene
Duplicate - which is a duplicate of the prison scene.

I applied the Mask Filter to the Mask layer, but when I run the file, the searchlight isn't working. Instead of allowing the prison to show through, I just see a red circle moving around.

What have I done wrong?

right-click the layer with the red circle on it. have you opted the point mask?

Thanks. I have set the "Mask" layer which has the red circle on it and selected "Mask" from the popup menu.

I don't know what you mean by "point mask".

I have put a motion tween on the red circle.

only allowed one effect per layer so cant mask and tween.

i did read of a workaround once but i cant remember where at the moment.

Well yes and no! Sort of got mixed up with a draggable mask! You can tween a mask. Question is kathrync2003, what effect are you looking for exactly? The reverse of this?

The whole prison would be darker and just brighter in the circle mask?

As far as I know you can tween a mask when publishing as flash 6, but it won't work as flash 5, i just tried it.

i made a movieclip containing a circle and made a formtweening to a square.
then i put this clip on a layer, made a motiontween and used this layer as a mask.

well as said before, works for flash 6, doesn't for flash 5.

maybe we are misunderstanding each other but you absolutely can tween a masked layer... I have many times.... I have a layer marked as a mask and in that layer I have a symbol that I motion tween... absolutely can and is done....

does it work when you publish it? For me it works perfectly.
if you want to see the mask-effect in the fla while working on the file you have to lock the mask layer and the masked layer. regards

works fine the way you have the layers set- what are you wanting it to do?

What I was trying to get it to do was to show the prison
and just have the searchlight going over the building
with the building showing through.

I guess I messed it up.

So you only want to see the prison in the search light? Do you only want gray but a circle that shows the prison?

The gray was suppose to be the background of the prison. The prison layer is by itself and I wanted the search light to move across the prison.

Which it's not doing.

well here is what I see:

the search light is correctly masking the prison... it is not masking dark filter or duplicate because those layers are not marked as masked...

perhaps what you need to do is make the bottom three layers all masked... still not sure if I totally understand what you are going for, but is all you want to see is the search light then simply mark all of the layers as masked except of course for the mask itself
