Masking a Text field

Hi. I was wondering if anybody knew how to mask text? What I have right now is a masking layer on top of a text box. The text box (on the masked layer) will then motion-tween upwards to create a scrolling effect. But, the box which I have drawn on the masking layer (over top of the text box located on the masked layer) doesn't seem to work. I run the program and no text shows up at all. I should also mention I am loading my text dynamically from a text file (and I know the text is loading because I have run the flash animation without the masking layer). Oh, and I'm using Flash MX 2004 with Flash player 7 installed. Any help would be much appreciated.
