How does one map to a folder that is shared on Small Business Server 2003? The server is on a Workgroup.

First, make sure the folder is set up for sharing. On the client computer, go to Network Places and expand to find the folder. You may need to go to "Entire Network", "Microsoft Windows Network" "Show Entire Contents of Network"

Then, expand the workgroup and navigate to the shared folder, right-click the folder and select Map Network Drive. Assign it a letter that won't be in use (Mine is "S:" for Server...genius, huh?)

This is easier to do in Sharepoint (share a folder), Drive Mapping is apparently considered "old school" but it's fine for a simple small network like mine.

There is probably a script that can do this but, if your network is as small as mine, just go to each machine and do the above.

Thanks. I do know how to Map Network Drive but on Small Business Server on a Workgroup I can't map to the drive. When I expand the workgroup and click on the machine name which has the shared folder it doesn't show me any shared folders.

Hmmm...have you logged in to the client machine as Admin, and enabled sharing of the Folder on the Network? Look at the permissions of the folder. This is strange because I can view shared folders across my SBS Domain but it is not a workgroup.

My home network IS a workgroup, and I can share folders and map drives everywhere among machines. Maybe have a look at using Sharepoint to map the folders instead of drives:

It's a PDF.

Yes, I enabled it. can't see the shared folder. Shpuldn't I have the usernames and passwords for those users who want to access the shared folder setup somewhere on that machine?

I looked at the PDF. What's a SharePoint Library?

Reinstall SBS 2003 and dont demote it this time. Use it how it was designed to be used, it will do all you want it to do, and many times more.

Running it how you have it now will more than likely require a consistently high admin overhead to keep it performing as you need it to.

To create a Sharepoint library (I just call them Sharepoint folders, may or may not be the same thing):

On the client with the folder that you want to share, open IE and go to . If you used ConnectComputer this may already be the default home page. Go to General Documents, New Folder, and create, Save and Close the folder. Now go to the homepage and select the folder you just created. Go to "Upload Document", Select Upload Multiple Files, navigate to the folder, and tick the box next to "Name" to upload all the documents. Now, everybody should have access to the folder (through CompanyWeb). You can then map the drive according to that document, but it's not really necessary.

The folder will also now be backed up through SBSBackup, a real plus for an important folder. Once you are comfortable with the setup, you can delete the folder from the client to avoid conflicts.

Please note that I am not an SBS guru, just another user trying to help, but this system works well for my company with a few shared folders and a single mapped drive. My next upgrade will be replacing the mapped drive with Sharepoint.

I don't understand WHY the shared folder is not visible on your network, but I have never used SBS in a Workgroup, just as a Domain.

on Small Business Server on a Workgroup
I'm with noveyron.
Again, SBS should be the Domain Controller.

Hope This Helps, PH.

I agree. I doubt you could get Sharepoint working otherwise.
