Mapping of DBMS data types

Hi,

As I understand it ODBC returns DBMS specifc data types. Is there any way to map these to a generic data type, and if not does anybody have suggestions for how this can be done manually in the program, bearing in mind that I'm trying to build a DBMS independent application?

Actually, the SQL data types are defined independent of the underlying database. Here is a reference:
