Hello,
I am on a redhat 8.0 client trying to map a microsoft server's drive. How can I accomplish this without having samba?

You can't. At least, you need the smbfs filesystem to be able to mount the Win32-shared resource to a mount point on your filesystem.

You are going to need at least the samba-client package to have the smbfs filesytem type available. And samba-client is likely dependent on the samba package.

you can also try lin neighborhood a front end for samba, which is similar to my network in xp. i know that Lin neighborhood is installed by default with suse 8.1 pro and Lycoris. its a bit tricky to install in redhat at first in my experience. in Lycoris i can see all of the dhcp machines on out network here at work.
