map sharepoint to drive

i have mapped my sharepoint document library to a network drive (X: \\intranet\documents). Everything works fine but i cannot check out office documents. I get an error message telling me the documents must have been deleted or checked out by another person.

I am using Office 2007 and WSS 3.0
