PROBLEM:
I am trying to map fileserver drives located at work (through VPN tunnel) onto my laptop.

GEAR:
Toshiba laptop, XP-home(at remote site, aka home)
Symantec 200R VPN appliance (located at work)
Misc. Servers using Server 2003 or Server 2000

WHAT WORKS:
I can create map-drives using the remote LAN IP's (192.168.12.*)

WHAT DOESN'T WORK:
Mapping drives using machine names, or paths defined by DFS.

What I'm most interested in is mapping drives defined by the DFS (Distributed File System) administration application. I've had the same issue when trying to map to machine names (yes, I'm saying this twice, just using more words).

I can map these drives, no problem, on local machines on the network; just not on remote devices (laptops).

Any help is greatly appreciated

this is name resolution issue. it is better to setup WINS server. this step by step troubleshooting may help,

browsing over VPN involves routers, multiple segments and multihomed servers. It is generally recommended that you implement WINS for name ...
