Hi all

Can anyone suggest which software to use with VFP6 or 9 in relation to Map Data? We have for the past few years been using Map Info Professional 6 which allows tables to be created in DBF format. The problem we have experienced lately is that the data is being easily corrupted and lost when being viewed in Map Info.

A brief background of the project involves several tables within Map Info that store street furniture for example, lamposts, drainage covers, telephone boxes etc. Users plot the data manually on Map Info with UK Ordnance Survey Maps which is later updated in a VFP6 application and as mentioned, sometimes the table becomes corrupt.

Is there a more stable way / Map Software app out there?

Many thanks

Lee

Lee,

Given that MapInfo is one of the two leading GIS products (the other being ArcView), I would suggest you concentrate on why your data is being corrupted, rather than look for an alterative package.

Have you considered using the MapX ActiveX control? It uses exactly the same data sets as MapInfo, and is designed to work with languages like VFP.

Hi Mike

Thanky you for the reply. I've not considered using the MapX ActiveX control as yet but I will look in to it. In as far as why the data is becoming corrupted, it is a bit of a mystery. It seems the system will run for many months then some of the plotted data will be moved to other locations for no reason.

Anyway, thanks again and when I take a look at what you have suggested, I'll post back.

Regards

Lee

Lee,

I know you've now found the answer to this yourself, but for the benefit of other ...

MapX is essentially the MapInfo product, packaged as an ActiveX control. You can download a 30-day eval from the MapInfo site.

I know at least one company that is successfully using it with VFP, so it is definitely worth considering.

Mike
