Manual client installation cannot locate server

I've been trying to manually install the SMS client but keep getting the message "The wizard was unable to locate teh Systems Managment Server. Enter the name of a specific installation." I've tried everything, servername, site\servername, servername\database, etc. What am i doing wrong ?

Have you specified a CAP ?
When using smsman.exe SMS tries to connect to the CAP to get the client files....The error-message described by you means that smsman.exe fails to find a CAP.

I have specified a CAP, I chose the option to have the site sytem act as the CAP.

On the server that you are attempting to manually install the client, open the following log:

C:\Winnt\MS\SMS\Logs\WNManual.log

Near the bottom of the log you should see entries detailing why it didn't install. I am betting that you will see an error message indicating that it couldn't find a domain controller for the domain the site server is in. Regardless of where you launch SMSMan from, it tries to find a domain controller with the SMSLogon share.

I ran into the same problem with a new SMS 2.0 SP4 site. I found that sometimes I just had to specify the site server in the SMSMan wizard and try several times in a row and it would eventually work.

There's no WNManual.log file, only a WNRemote.log file. I'm beginning to think I've done something fundamentally wrong here....

Aha, by running the command a few times it's created it.

Automatic mode is OFF~
Quiet mode is OFF~
Verbose level is 3~
/M Specified is none~
CAP Install is ON~~
Random CAP Selection is OFF~~
Discovery Only flag is OFF~~
TS session override is OFF~~
Uninstall switch is OFF~~

Should something be specified for whatever "M" is ?
