Mandrake Single Network Firewall being used as proxy for Win2K systems. I'm able to get online with the 2K systems but can not send or receive e-mail with outlook express. Ports 23,110 (pop3 and smtp) or open. Any ideas on maybe ingoing and outgoing mail or something.

Hi,

Well firstly it should be port 25 (smtp) and port 110 (pop3) - 23 is telnet. You would also have to allow port 53 (dns) if the smtp server was local because when you send mail to joe@user.com its got to resolve the MX for the user.com domain before attempting to connect on port 25. If you are using the smtp server of an ISP past the firewall then the latter would not apply.

Regards

Sorry about that poeople, I do mean (port 25).

Hi,

Are you hosting the smtp/pop3 server on the Mandrake box or are clients just pointing to your ISP's servers ? Also, can they get other internet connectivity ?

Rgds

No I'm not hosting, the smtp and pop3 are pointing to my ISP. Yes they are both connected to the net.

Hi,

OK..I'd guess that you haven't set up IP masquerading on the linux machine. From what I can see the Mandrake firewall 'proxy' set up just configures the squid proxy server. This is a http only proxy and, as such, would not handle smtp/pop3 (see
If you have a single connection from the linux box to the internet and want to share that for things other than web browsing, you must set-up the IP masquerading. This is just another name for source nat (network address translation). Presumably there is something in the graphical config utility that will talk you though setting this up....
