Mandrake Linux 8.1 and CDROM

I'm new to Linux and I have Mandrake 8.1. I'm having a few issues and can't figure this out...It maybe just 'newbie stupidity'...

I'm trying to use the CDPLAYER under GNOME or KDE and it tells me that the CDROM is not mounted.

I have 2 CD's on the system. 1 a CD-R and the other a CDRW. If I do a DMESG | LESS (saw a reference to that in research that I was doing to help with this prob) it shows the devices under /dev/hdb and /dev/hdc.

I do a:
mount -t auto /dev/hdb /mnt/cdrom

The /mnt/cdrom directory does exist.

Now, I'm not sure if that is right or wrong but if I put a music CD in the drive - how do I look at the content of that CD? If it's a music CD shouldn't it atleast give me ".CDA" files?

I'm trying to look at the contents of the CD by putting the CD in the drive and then doing a

ls -l /mnt/cdrom

What am I doing wrong?

Any assistance would greatly be appreciated.

'xmms' has a CD reader plugin. That will work for music CDs. They aren't like regular data CDs. I'm sure there's other ways of doing it.

Thanks for the response. But 2 things:

1) what is 'xmms'?
2) how would I just look at contents of a CD? Music or not? Does the CD have to have been created a certain way?
