I'm a complete newbie when it comes to Linux/Unix. What I would like to do is this:

Setup a simple network server using Mandrake 9.1 where every client OS needs to be "WinXP Pro". Can this even be done?

I would like the server to manage all standard file server routines as well as handle normal network user account/password details etc. Note I will be using Mandrake 9.1 standard (3CD distro) and am not even sure if it has all the networking applications I might need.

Not sure if I have even explained this appropriately but would appreciate any help. Thanks

You're looking for Samba and yes it's included. See forum865

Thanks for replying so promptly smah.

Seem's that there's an answer for 'everything Linux'. Hehe, maybe thats the main problem though...too much information :p. Anyhow, I'll do some reading in the Forum you've pointed out but as I see you've replied to many thousands of posts could I perhaps call on you (ask a few questions) along my journey to installing my so called Mandrake Linux Server?

Cheers

Shann

Thanks for the star. As for promply replying - lucky timing.

There is a lot of info for linux and there's much you can do with it. You will also find alot of info in this forum and the Linux (client) forum. Be sure to read the FAQ's in the forums also. There are also other pertinant forums that relate to linux as you get further along - mail programs, scripting, programming languages, web server etc.

As for asking questions - just post your questions in the appropriate forums, but don't direct it toward me - there are many people more qualifed to answer than I. I am still a relative newbie to linux.
