When I try to connect to the internet using kppp or try querying the modem through kppp's 'setup > query modem' option I get the message that the 'modem is already in use'. But it's not, I have even tried picking up the phone to be sure. I have also got a network card installed (haven't quite got that working yet either) if that makes any difference. I have gone through all the steps of setting up the modem several times now, always getting the same message. During my install of Mandrake 8.0 it couldn't detect my (internal) modem, I had to manually assign the COM port it resides on (COM3 => ttyS2). Anyone have any ideas what is happening?

TIA,
xor

If it is an internal modem, it could be a winmodem, which could mean that it will not work with Linux.

Check out to see if there are drivers available for your internal modem. Depending on the type of modem, you could well be in luck. AV
