Mandrake 7.2 shutdown problem

During shutdown/reboot, the system freezes showing "INIT: no more processes left at this runlevel". Hitting the power switch causes a stack dump, (Process swapper) followed by the message "Aiee killing interrupt handler, Kernel ... attempted to kill the idle task In swapper task - not syncing".
Can anyone explain why this is happening & how to fix it. I've re-installed the system twice but it's still a problem - I have had Mandrake 7.2 running quite satisfactorily up till now.

Nick.
