I just got Mandrake 6.1 off a cover cd and it installed fine, but when I reboot I can not login, I put root in and press enter then it just refreshes the screen as if I never put a user name in ??? any ideas...
Simon Jones
sijones_uk@yahoo.com
<a href= Allandale Youth Works
God am good!!! and good lookin :)

Not sure about this problem specifically, but I've seen this on SCO UnixWare 7. Is there an OK button on the login dialog? Try clicking that to see if it accepts 'root' as a login. This is a problem that seems to intermittently appear on our main SCO system console, whereby <Return> works sometimes, and doesn't at others.

It may be that 'root' isn't set up to work with X. Try setting up a normal user and see if it will let them log in to the box. (BTW, are you running KDE? Or WindowMaker? I think both of these desktop managers need to have an install program run for each user that wants to use them. IT may be that the Mandrake installation hasn't done this for root.)

Hope this helps.

Mandrake normally installs GNOME/Enlightenment as the default GUI...did you try tabbing to the "password" field before hitting <enter>? (Or am I way off on some disjointed tangent?)
-Robherc
robherc@netzero.net

*nix installation & program collector/reseller. Contact me if you think you've got one that I don't :)

There's no X server running it is just the normal console login?
Simon Jones
sijones_uk@yahoo.com
<a href= Allandale Youth Works
God am good!!! and good lookin :)

Hmmm... do you have another version of Linux (pref. not Mandrake) at hand??? I had a similar problem with Mandrake 5.3....it finally ended up giving me the error message "Go away! You don't exist :p".....that's when I switched distribs!
-Robherc
robherc@netzero.net

*nix installation & program collector/reseller. I have only seen this problem when a default shell is not setup in the passwd file. Well I uh actually created that problem by assigning a different shell in the passwd file for root, however the path was not correct, the shell could not be found and uh well I guess you know the rest. Perhaps as chgwhat says:

SCO openserver will do the same thing if the passwd file is corrupt or if the symbolic file does not match the actual file. Emergency boot disk was the only solution.

It's not the computer at falut because rh6 and corel linux work fine,

If they carn't get the install right then I not going to piss about with this version as far as am concerend I will go on to something else... like I am now running Corel Linux and my cdrw works under this so I'am happy!!!
Simon Jones
sijones_uk@yahoo.com
<a href= Allandale Youth Works
God am good!!! and good lookin :)
