Hello,

I have a bunch of users who I have added to the standard "Reader" group. I
want to give this group one single permission and that is to Create a
General Discussion. I do not want them to be able to add to or edit any
other lists. I cannot figure out how to grant this single permission under
the "Edit Site Group Permissions". Please help!

Thank you in advance,
Sharon

Sharepoint does not have this. I am not sure if Microsoft Rights Management ( if it does this either. For my site, what I have done to HIDE a lot of that functionality is I created a SharePoint Development custom link web part. There, I placed Document List, Create and Site Settings links. Then removed those links from the Navigation Bar of each of the sites that I did not wanted for it to show. Then, I placed the web part on the body of the site but used Audiences to control "access" to it. If you see, I have placed the word HIDE in caps because that is all I am doing. What I mean is that if someone knows the direct URL for these management tools, then they will still be able to get to them. But at least I am hiding most of the functionality from the users that are not SharePoint Experts. So in your case, I would do a custom Links web part where I would put the Discussion creation link, place that web part in the boby of the page and the "control access" using permissions and audiences.

Hope this helps,

If you gointo the manage columns and settings for the duscussion list you can give them a higher security level just for that list.

Example I have users that can only read the site but on one list they have the ability to add entries for a list suited for them.

When fustrated remember, In the computer world there is allmost always a backdoor.

I think what he wants is the capability for users to only be able of creating discussion groups but deny the capability of creating any other document libraries or lists. Not about creating topics within an already created discussion, which is what you could change whether the user has contribute or reader or any other rights.
