Managing NB media ids

Hi all,
i've a small doubt on how NB manages the media ids.
We have NB data center 4.5 and our robot doesn't have a barcode reader.
When images on a tape has expired then what happens to the media id which was associated with that.
I took that tape out of the library and when i imported that back in, it took a brand new media id. Will I never be able to use previous media id which it had prior to its image expiration?
Basically, I wanna predict all the media ids which will be used by NB in next 2yrs suppose.
Will it be possible for neone to point me towards a relevant manual or give a piece of advice..

The only way to do that I think would to assign ID's as you add the tapes into the library. Tapes with not id will be assigned new ones dependant on rules you can set up. Not sure you can make them keep that id.
