Hi

I am member of a team of software developers

I will soon be managing a developer who works some 200 miles from our office.

Does have anyone have any tips on how best to manage remote workers?

The things that concern me the most is tracking time she is spending on projects, continuing her development and making sure she still feels a valued member of the team and company.

Thanks in advance.

clear communications, clearly defined expectations and mandatory time and status tracking.

Second the recommendation for clear, and frequent communications. When holding meetings, your first step should be to conference them in.

BTW: You might want to get them a Vonage account and a good speakerphone, if they're working from home.

Is this worker in a remote company office or on his (or her) own somewhere?

Makes a difference because, in a remote office, the "boss" tends to regard anyone under his roof as his employee. A friend of mine had that problem and his description of the issue was
His heart may be in San Francisco but his A** is in New Orleans.
As chiph says, phone calls every day. Make sure the employee has clear assignments and is working on them.
