Management tasks take longer as disks get bigger - tasks like virus scans, backup and defragmentation are now getting to crisis point for some of us. There will not be enough hours in the day. I am defragmenting a 20 gig partition which I have just deleted a load of garbage from. Even though it is hardly fragmented at all it is taking hours, even with Diskeeper. I think it would be quicker to move all the files (about 10 Gig) to a new disk, then move them back.

Are there any new fast tools available for jobs like this?

If had to do it I would just back the LUN up to tape, format the drive and restore.
The number and size of the files makes an impact on how long time it will take, but that should basicly be the same for a disk to tape as a disk to disk copy.

10 GB to tape and back shouldn't take that long (depending on your backup system)

And at the same time you would test your backup and restore procedures
