any suggestions on which management packs for monitoring Linux and Unix systems through MOM?
have considered the one from eXc Software. anyone tried the management pack from these and got it working?
or is it better to just receive SNMP from the Linux and Unix machines?

Hy,

we have worked with eXc now for almost two years. Though it has matured a little it is far from being professional. The Configuration Tool of eXc is still a little uncomfortable - manageability is very limited. That's why we had programmed even our own User-Interface and Database to be able to manage our 150 selfmade Monitoring-scripts and to be able to define kind of profiles, like, which scripts should run on which server .... So you can use eXc with the given Standards or use also your own Scripts. Many of our own monitoring-scripts that proved to work correctly for many years under HP-OpenView/ITO are not handled correctly by eXc. eXc-SSH-Sessions that timed out are not cleared correctly on the Servers which are monitored. So on all Servers we have dozens of dead SSH-Sessions which eXc won't close any more.

So we have returned to open source: "Big Sister" is incredible easy to handle on a text-file basis! Currently our MOM-Admin is about to decide wether we'll send SNMP-Traps to MOM or make BigSister posting into Logfiles on a share which can be scanned by MOM.
With BigSis many of our own scripts - well most of them become obsolete. You can monitor easily from OSI-Layer 1 (SNMP) up to the Applicationlayer (Oracle, mySQL, Webservers ..). We distribute the BigSIS clients and configs partly by Venus - or manually as well.
By the way - now we start to use BigSister also on Windows - its nice. As MOM seems to be almost lost with W2K-Machines that are not perfectly configured, patched, rebootet, caressed ...
BigSister ist just doing its job and even delivers e graphical Reporting - if wanted.

If you don't like OpenSource see also my Post in thread966-1099223.

Greetings from the Black Forest
