I'm looking to purchase a device to manage multiple subnets, as well as move packets. I'm looking for opinions on what the best solution for TODAY is & looking forward to the FUTURE, would it be better to purchase a traditional router to move packets between subnets OR use a managed switch to move packets between subnets. Also, the device needs to be able to manage/CREATE subnets, as I need to create a testing environment/subnet separate from all other subnet(s). Which method would work best in these situations?
Thanks.

If you are looking for performance finding a switch with an integrated route processor would provide better performance. In terms of functionality, it is going to depend on what you are willing to spend, how big the network is, what protocols are being run, etc. Unless there is something unusual about the network, you probably wouldn't find too much of a difference either way. However, if you wanted to integrate a WAN interface you should go with a router.....

Without babbling further, I guess it really comes down to your particular situation....and needs... Erik Rudnick, CCIE No. 9545
