We have used an 11 year old laptop to manage an even older Merlin Legend System (Release 7 - 1999 - looking at my "System Manager's Quick Referencé" guide).

Current situation:

Starting from one of the ports on the Merlin System Module, I have a blue Ethernet cable that ends at what appears to be some sort of Ethernet to serial (DB9) converter. This device is connected to the serial port on the back of the laptop.

New situation - questions:

The newer laptop has the Ethernet port built in.

Can I connect the laptop and system module directly, without going through the serial port? So: Ethernet port (NIC) on laptop, single Ethernet cable, Ethernet port on system module?

With crossover cable if need be.

In any event, and not having set up the current configuration, I'm wondering if all the data is stored in some sort of chip in the module and all I need to do is connect or... is there data on the old laptop that I need to move over to the new laptop?

And then, how do I connect?

Do I need to configure the serial interface with bauds and all that?

Looking at guides and other topics on the forum, it looks like the default IP is 10.0.0.42? Now we have that # already assigned to another device on the network (can change it though).

It's not Ethernet, it's a SERIAL port. It just used an 8-pin jack form factor.

So get a USB to Serial adapter, plug that into your new computer, then use the existing 355 Adapter (that's the serial to 8-pin adapter) to connect everything up.

Install the WinSPM software on the new computer, and it will walk you through the settings.

The programming is stored inside of the Processor module of the Legend.

Just had a chance to do this, worked perfectly. Many thanks.
