Making your website more searchable - No meta tags were found

Hi all

I am new to HTML so need a little help if possible. It's the first time i have been in this forum and this question has probablys been asked several times.

I have published my website on the net through a popular web provider. The site has an online meta tag creator and HTML coding tester. I used the tag creator to produce the following tags in my coding:

<title>Computer Repairs, Software and Hardware Upgrades and General Help in the ****** area</title>

<meta name="description" content="Need help with your PC. Is it running slow? Does it keep crashing? Let me solve your problems. I will show you what I have done so you will be able to do it yourself the next time saving you money.">

<meta name="keywords" content="PC COMPUTER REPAIRS HELP FIX SOFTWARE HARDWARE UPGARDE CHEAP ANTI-VIRUS MEMORY ">

When i run the online coding tester it says that:

1 There are not enough words in your title, it contains less than 5 words.
2 You do not have a tag for keywords.
3 Your page doesn't have any meta tags. The meta tags improve the search engines' classification of your site.

I thought i had enough info on them. Any ideas?

read a few other posts here, Meta tags are not used for ranking. These online "page checkers" are still stuck 5 years back when all you needed was an overstuffed keyword meta.

The fact that it's not picking up the words in your title and not seeing your META tags makes me think that maybe your HTML is malformed.

Can you post a code sample?

But Chris is correct, keyword metas, although used by some engines, are virtually worthless for gaining rank.

without looking it will be the javascript that gets stuffed in above the <html> tags. It can also causes problem for browsers because of having content before the document start.

If you want to be taken remotely serious get a proper domain and host. You can get web hosting for peanuts.

i recommend they are very cheap and i have not had a problem in the 2 or 3 years that i've dealt with them.

And to note the comment made above about meta tags not being used. you are lying to the new guy. They are still used, very much so. The description tag is used by everyone. The keyword tag is used by Yahoo. it used to be used by everyone else too, but people would spam their keywords. just because you don't use them doesn't mean that google and yahoo don't use them.

Another thing i would look into is google adwords, its a quick way to get to the first page and the top of the list. which is pretty hard in the IT field.

Although meta tags are still used it is not worth putting high levels of effort into them since most SE's will either disregard their content or assign minimal weighting to them.
It may be that SE's will assign weighting to meta Keywords based on how relevant they are to the page content.

The description meta tag is used, certainly by Google, but again it's weighting is minimal and perhaps is dependant on real page content.

In short, the meta tags are read but don't necessarily provide any benefit to search results ranking.

Why is this so? Because in the past it's been easy to stuff meta tags with keywords and phrases that either don't relate to the page in question or in a blatant attempt to spam the SE's.

It actually says not used for ranking, and many tests have been done on pages where a nonsense word has been placed in a meta KW and the page does not appear for that word.
Description tag is a different thing altogether as it can get shown as the snippet of text in the SERPs.

If you're located in one community, but do business in several surrounding communities, having the names for those communities or those alternate spellings in your meta keywords tag means that your page is now a candidate to show up in that search. That doesn't say that it'll rank, but at least it's considered. Whereas, if those words never appear then it can't be considered.

I always wondered why the search engines don't simply read the first, say 6 words/phrases of a meta, ignore the rest and only log a result if a word/phrase appears within the site over a certain number of times.
