Making Sharepoint Annoucements stand out?

When we post a new announcement in sharepoint, it gets that 'New' icon. Right now, the icon is visible for about a day, then disappears regardless of whether a user has read the announcement or not.
Is there a way of keeping the 'New' icon visible until a user reads the announcement, then have it disappear?

If we are talking about SPS 2003 or WSS v2 there is a command with the stsadm.exe tool that allows you to change the amount of time the !New icon is displayed (might be the same for MOSS 2007).

Just do a search on the net and you should find a step by step solution.

Thanks for the reponse Thomas. I have tried that, but the issue at hand is that I want the new icon to disappear only when a user has read an announcement. Similar to how forums bold new posts until you read them.
