Making ODBC connection between Filmaker 6 and Windows 2000 server

I need to copy data contained on a windows 2000 server (sql database). I do not need to move data from FM to server, Only from server to Filemaker. I have never established an odbc connection and don't quite know where to begin. Are there any simplified checklist for this out there?

FM: File-->Import Records-->ODBC Source...
