I have an image that I want to use as a background, but I want it to be very faint so the type and other images show clearly over it.

I am using windows XP Pro and Photoshop 7.

I am mostly a beginner with photoshop.

Have a look at the Layers palette - is the image labelled as 'background'? If so, double click it to make it active. There is a slider at the top of the Layers palette called 'Opacity' - click on it and move the triangular slider to a lower number.
