Making a letter on top of a circle transparent

I am trying to make a script letter "c"( that is currently white) that is on a black circle background transparent. The very end result is when I place the file in Quark, I need to be able for the images behind the "c" to be visible. Does that make any sense? It's a really simple problem (I think) I just don't know how to do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. P.S. - I am working in Illustrator CS 11. Thanks again.
