Hello, I am using Cute FTP and wish to make a directory on my webspace read/writeable to. (so i can allow users to upload to it) when i try and change the attributes on cute it tells me
"[upload]
COMMAND:> SITE CHMOD 200 upload
500 'SITE CHMOD 200 upload': command not understood"

anyone got any ideas?

thanks in advance

Are you using Windows or unix as a server OS? If Windows, you can't change the properties via FTP. You have to go to the host server and modify the attributes using the server config files (such as Apache httpd.conf).

If unix, you should be able to chmod remotely, given administrative permissions. Newposter

Good point, cian, that slipped right past me.

4=read
2=write
1=execute

So to set r/w for admin, user and whole world, you want to chmod 666.

I was thinking if he was running Windows, the command isn't valid and wouldn't be understood, but perhaps he issued the wrong values under chmod to a unix server. Newposter

I'm a bit of an amateur at all this, so you will have to forgive my ignorance!
I typed '666' in the change attributes manual and i also typed chmod 666 and i recieved this response:

[upload]
COMMAND:> SITE CHMOD 666 upload
500 'SITE CHMOD 666 upload': command not understood

if anyone has any ideas i would appreciate it!

thanks in advance

But, back to my original question, are you using Windows or unix? Newposter

I'm Using Windows 2000 o/s and Cute FTP to upload the files to my space

thanks

If you're using Windows 2000 on the *server*, you cannot use chmod, as it's a unix command not understood by Windows. Instead, you'll have to get the administrator of the server to change the permissions in IIS or Apache, or whatever software is running the web server. You can't administer the directory permissions remotely with CuteFTP or any other FTP utility if the server is Windows. The only way you could control it remotely is to take control of the server using pcAnywhere or similar emulation software.

Another weakness of M$. Newposter
