Making a Backup Domain Controller

This is not your typical BDC, we are still running windows nt (obviously) and we are in need of patching. I'm not real big on patching without a backup and don't know how well ghost will work on our server. We do have an extra server lying around though.
I want to know if I still all the crucial settings from our actual PDC in the event of an emergency will I be able to just swap in the other server and be on our way?

Basically yes, just promote one of your BDC's if the PDC goes pear shaped.
