Make test error with mysql-4.0.14

I ran configure and make with no errors but when I run make test I get the following. Has anyone seen this issue before? It is being installed on Solrais 9 Sparc platform.


mysql-4.0.14/mysql-test/var/run/master.pid was not created in 30 seconds; Aborting
make: *** [test] Error 1

I've seen a few sites with this exact problem with no apparent solution.
Did you manage to get it going?
