Does anyone know if there is a simple and good quality program to backup my linux hard drive and make an image where I can make a boot CD like True Image for Windows?

True image by Acronis is a great program for Windows and you can make a boot CD, but unfortunately it is not suitable for Linux.

Any ideas?

Some distros come with a backup utility. Which distro are you using?? Google it; maybe that'll put you in the right direction.

I use Acronis True Image on my FC and SuSE boxes. What makes you think it won't work? A good Imager doesn't care what's on the drive.

Have a look at remastering knoppix; rebuild a knoppix live cd distro, you create a compressed filesystem which all can fit on a cd or a dvd. If you want a boot up cd. or you can do one better; on your linux box at the console; type "man mkiso" this will give you a descripton on the mkiso app which you can create any kind of image file.

emerald;
Can you clarify whether you're looking for
i) a backup and restore utility, or
ii) something that will make a LiveCD from your hard drive image.

Big difference.

I've never tried this, but I wonder if this would work...

dd if=/dev/hda of=/some/mounted/directory/my_drive.iso

Sounds like a project!!! :)

That would work; but it wont be a bootable cd.

why not use the tar command??

tar -zcvf /var.tgz /var/*

as an example. it will just make a .tgz file with the contents of the directory.
